From Clinical Expertise to Confident Leadership: Matt’s Coaching Journey
Case Study with Matthew Clark
"The coaching helped me redefine my role and own my space in the organisation."

About Matt
Matt is Head of Operations for Cancer Care at The London Clinic. His remit covers a wide range of clinical and administrative services that support the patient journey, including radiotherapy, medical physics, molecular imaging, MDT coordination and inpatient and outpatient services.
The Challenge
With a background as a therapy radiographer, Matt had spent much of his career in radiotherapy before stepping into a senior operational leadership role. The move required him to lead across multiple services and teams, often in areas where he no longer had the same technical certainty he had relied on before.
Coaching Experience
Overall Experience as a Coachee
Matt described his coaching experience as incredibly positive. At a time of major organisational change and shifting responsibilities, coaching gave him a consistent space to reflect, step back and think differently about his role.
What made the experience especially valuable was the independence of the coach. Having a confidential, objective space outside of his line management allowed Matt to explore self-doubt, test his thinking and build confidence in his leadership.
Coaching Relationship & Learning
-
Built a strong, safe relationship with his coach from the outset.
-
Used coaching as a space to think through challenges and decisions.
-
Learned to recognise transferable skills beyond his clinical background.
-
Became more aware of imposter syndrome and self-doubt.
-
Gained practical tools for reflection and self-checking.

What made the Coaching effective?
Matt’s coach created a safe and practical environment where he could speak openly, think out loud and work through challenges without judgement. The coaching was not just about reassurance; it also offered challenge, structure and useful models that helped him make sense of his role and his development.
The first session stood out in particular, because it helped him name the issues he was facing and begin moving forward immediately. The coach also adapted the timing of sessions depending on what was happening at work, making the support relevant and timely.
