International Women’s Day often invites us to pause and reflect: not just on motherhood itself, but on the journeys that shape us along the way.
When I look back at the last several years of my life, it feels like I’ve lived through multiple chapters. From Exams to Emotions: The Balancing Act of Today’s Woman captures this transition beautifully, reminding us of the strength behind every chapter. Each chapter pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t always expect.
Whether I realised it at the time or not, the entire journey has been shaped by two qualities I didn’t always know I had: resilience and adaptability.
This is my story of adjusting, shifting, rebuilding, and redefining what balancing a career and motherhood can look like, while learning to stay true to who I am becoming.
The First Lessons in Adaptability
For me, the first real test came long before any exam.
Studying didn’t just give me a qualification; it taught me my earliest lessons in adaptability. I entered university as a mature student, already used to full-time work and structured office routines. At the same time, my evenings and weekends were dedicated to caring for my nan during the later years of her life.
Balancing study with responsibility wasn’t simple, but it was where I first learned how to stretch, adjust, and keep going, even when life pulled me in more than one direction.
Looking back now, I realise those years quietly laid the foundation for everything that followed.
The Fast Pace of Corporate London
Stepping into the London corporate world felt like jumping onto a treadmill already running at full speed. The pace was relentless, expectations were high, and the learning curve was steep.
But resilience thrives in challenge.
Every demanding project, tight deadline, and meeting where I had to prove myself strengthened my confidence. I learned to adapt quickly, communicate clearly, and hold my own in a competitive environment. The corporate world didn’t just shape my skillsit shaped my stamina.
Still, eventually I felt the pull toward something more balanced.
A Different Direction
Leaving London for a local role was a shift that required adaptability in a different way. The pace slowed, the environment changed, and I had to rebuild my professional identity in a new setting.
But the change gave me something invaluable: space—space to think, breathe, and prepare for the next chapter I didn’t yet know was coming.
Motherhood Changes Everything
Motherhood transformed everything.
Suddenly, I wasn’t just balancing tasks—I was balancing identities. The resilience required to care for a tiny human while trying to remain myself was unlike anything I had experienced before.
Plans changed. Priorities shifted. Work began to take on a completely different meaning.
Motherhood didn’t weaken my ambition—it strengthened my clarity. It helped me understand what truly mattered and the kind of life I wanted for my family.
The Search for Flexibility
Trying to find a part-time, flexible role that worked around family life became a real test of patience and persistence. Many jobs simply aren’t designed with parents’ realities in mind.
Then we relocated to a new area, and the challenge deepened. I found myself navigating unfamiliar workplaces while managing childcare and building new routines without the support networks I once relied on.
But each transition strengthened my resilience and helped me become clearer about what I needed to thrive. Eventually, the right opportunity appeared.
Looking Back
Looking back now - across university, corporate London, career changes, motherhood, and relocation, I can see how each stage prepared me for where I am today.
Every challenge built resilience. Every transition required adaptability.
That’s why my current role feels like such a gift. For the first time, I’m in a position that fits me—not the other way around. It allows me to use my skills confidently while still being present for my family.
I’m incredibly grateful to The Activation Project for recognising the value of flexibility and trusting me to work in a way that supports both my professional contribution and my life at home.
It’s not just the role I’m thankful for; it’s the feeling of finally being in the right place.
A Mother’s Day Reflection
Motherhood stretches us in ways we never expect. It challenges us to rethink who we are, what matters most, and how we want our lives to work.
But it also reveals strengths we didn’t always know we had: Resilience, Adaptability, Clarity.
And sometimes, during those transitions, it helps to have someone alongside you.
If you’re navigating your own transition, whether it’s returning to work, redefining your career after motherhood, or trying to create a life that feels more aligned with who you are now, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
