How I have learnt to adapt my Leadership Style

In my years working both as an employee and as a leader, one thing has become clear to me: there is no single leadership style that works for everyone. Leadership is not a formula; it’s a relationship. There isn’t one “right” or “wrong” way to lead. Leaders show up differently, and what works for one person may not work for another.
I’ve seen this firsthand when supporting apprentices. A leadership approach that worked beautifully for one individual needed to be completely adjusted for the next, even when their skills were similar, simply because their personalities, motivations, and ways of learning were different.
“I remember working with an apprentice who needed reassurance and significant encouragement before taking ownership, while another excelled when given immediate autonomy. Leading them effectively meant adjusting my approach from time to time.”
Leadership, I’ve noticed, is less about applying a formula and more about responding to people as individuals.
It all starts with Authentic Leadership
A leader’s ability to be flexible, engage in continuous learning, and navigate the ever-changing dynamics of the workplace is critical. In my view, it all begins with being authentic and truthful; how we choose to show up every day. When we lead with authenticity, we create space for real empathy and move beyond performance to true connection. That honesty takes courage, especially when we share our own experiences and challenges, and it’s through these stories that we build trust, create understanding, and empower others to find their own voice. Empathy doesn’t just help us lead people; it helps liberate their potential.
With a healthy dose of Emotional Intelligence
Emotionally Intelligent leaders are often more successful at inspiring outcomes and creating harmony in the workplace. Their ability to read team dynamics, understand diverse perspectives, and respond thoughtfully strengthens both internal collaboration and external stakeholder relationships. At times, emotional awareness can also place leaders under pressure, but it’s part of what makes leadership meaningful and impactful by enabling stronger decision-making, trust, and resilience across teams.
Why your Leadership style matters today
Whether you’re just beginning your leadership journey or have years of experience, adaptability is a skill that can always be strengthened. Developing your leadership style starts with:
Understanding different mindsets and motivations
Learning about a range of leadership styles
Identifying your natural leadership approach
Remaining open to growth and feedback
The need for strong leadership is growing. Workplace research across the UK shows increasing dissatisfaction with leadership. A survey of 2,100 UK employees conducted by Visier found that 43% of employees have left a job because of their manager, while 53% of those considering leaving cite their manager as the reason.* (source: Two in five employees have quit because of bad manager, study finds)
These findings highlight an important truth: leadership style directly impacts engagement, retention, and workplace culture.
Being adaptable as a leader helps address this challenge by encouraging leaders to:
Be flexible in their approach, responding to the needs of their team members
Take deliberate action with clear outcomes in mind
Recognise that meaningful change takes time and remain committed to long-term goals
Welcome diverse perspectives to encourage innovation and collaborative problem-solving
Lead with truthfulness, fairness, and transparency in communication
At its core, leadership is about growing and adapting alongside the people we lead. When we combine flexibility with authentic leadership, we create environments where individuals, teams, and organisations can truly thrive.

At its heart, being an adaptable leader is a continuous practice of reflection, empathy, and action.
