Doug Middleton

Executive Coach and Director at
The Activation Project

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Calm, loyal, and experienced.

What are your unique strengths and accomplishments?

I have years of diverse experiences. I’ve held varied roles and lived a life deeply connected to sport not just as a coach, but also as a player, a director, and the secretary of my local rugby club. This hands-on involvement gives me a unique perspective that resonates with the leaders I work with, especially in the sports sector.

My coaching style is personal and relationship-focused. In the first session, I dedicate time to genuinely getting to know the individual. I share insights about my life, from my professional journey to my family, and encourage them to do the same - if they’re comfortable. This approach helps us build trust and rapport right from the start.

What is the most inspiring thing about coaching for you?

What inspires me most about coaching is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships. I like to see if I’ve made a real difference and regularly check in with my coachees to ensure our sessions are effective. The feedback, whether positive or constructive, helps me continually improve.

One particularly memorable moment was when a coachee, who was offered a higher-paying job, realised through our conversations that the money wasn’t the right motivation. Thanks to our sessions, he understood what truly mattered to him and made a decision that aligned better with his values. This is what I find most rewarding—helping people make decisions that are right for them, not just their job or organisation.

Ultimately, the connection I build with people is what makes coaching so fulfilling. Of course, there’s always the challenge of ensuring a good match.

What's the one piece of advice you would give to someone who's seeking coaching?

Embrace the process and flow with it for it to help you. You might not know how it’s going to help you until you get into it.

What are you happiest doing when you are not working?

When I’m not working, I’m happiest spending time with family and friends, usually with some sort of sport involved. Rugby and football are my main passions, and I love sharing those moments with the people I care about.
