Gill Crowther

Experienced Board-level Leader Coach

Describe yourself in 3 words.

Creative, optimistic, and practical.

What are your unique strengths and accomplishments?

My uniqueness comes from my own experience as a senior female leader.  I have often worked in male-dominated industries, such as automotive and sports, and faced challenges in trying to change the culture. I don’t believe personal experience is essential for effective coaching and support, but I know that having gone through my own experiences of challenges, this can enhance empathy and understanding, especially for those being the sole voice in a room.

With years of experience across multiple industries and serving on the boards of various commercial sectors, I offer a unique coaching perspective.

My curiosity and passion for drama also set me apart, particularly when I use my experience from the state to help people build confidence.  I run two drama groups - one for adults and children, and another exclusively for kids – and help members gain the confidence to sing, act, and dance.

What is the most inspiring thing about coaching for you?

My main motivation is seeing the difference that coaching can make, and understanding the positive impact it has on individuals.

I'd like to share my own story of coaching that shows the impact coaching can have. After having a big breakthrough coaching session myself, that sorted some long-held confidence issues, I was on my way back home when a dear friend called. He immediately noticed a change in my voice, and said, "You sound different." This illustrates the profound power of coaching, and I genuinely believe in the significant difference it can make.

What's the one piece of advice you would give to someone who's seeking coaching?

Make sure you clearly understand what you are seeking – specifically, what coaching entails.
People who request coaching but are not prepared to engage fully, to do the necessary work, to take ownership, and to follow through with actions, are not truly ready for coaching.

Understanding the differences between mentoring and coaching is essential before reaching out to potential mentors or coaches.

What are you happiest doing when you are not working?

The thing that makes me happiest when I'm not working is staying busy.

I enjoy being on the stage and love spending time with my family - eating, drinking and hanging out with my friends. I play a bit of netball and have recently started running. Additionally, I've been using Duolingo, and I'm currently on day 470 of learning French.
